Danielsrust Game Farm Review, August 2008
By Shirley Jooste
It’s a chilly winter’s morning in Gauteng and we leave Midrand at about 08h30 headed towards the Cradle of Mankind, to a Game Farm nestled in historic Africa. It only takes about an hour and a half to reach the farm, so its pretty close, but far enough to feel like you’re in a different world.
Once we reach the farm, we are greeted by an enormous warthog on his knees, grunting and rooting for tidbits in the ground. A few vagrant monkeys are teasing the dogs from the trees and having a lot of fun. Other than that, the most noticeable thing is the complete silence, no traffic, no alarm sirens, drills or road works…………ABSOLUTE BLISS.
Michelle and Darrell are the owners of Daniel’s Rust and give us a warm welcome, Our hosts show us around the main area which consists of an old school from the 1800’s, a large barn and several clumps of trees and bush where all the “fun” stuff happens like paintball and archery. The farm is rustic, which adds to its beauty…….no mod cons here (apart from the restrooms), and the feeling of freedom is liberating.
Darrell shows us our quad bikes with which we will be viewing the game. There are several other methods of taking in the sights (on horseback or bicycles….or even a tractor trailer), but we voted for the quads! There are a few different time options and routes on the game viewing and you can custom make your own package. We set off on our guided “tour” and find more than we bargained for. Besides the large variety of buck we are also shown an ancient graveyard, mainly consisting of family and fallen military men of the war. There are also old manganese mines dotted around the farm.
Zebra, Springbok, Eland and Waterbuck are just some of the animals in abundance, there are no “predators” so an outing on foot is also possible, only the occasional Jackal or Brown Hyena might make an appearance but they are harmless.
Daniels rust is the ideal spot for corporate events, as tailor-made packages for any size group can be arranged. There is something for everybody, and catering for these events is incorporated into the needs of the function. Daniel’s Rust is not too far away for Gautengers to travel and is an ideal place to have a lot of fun and experience REAL Africa at the same time.
